In the Zone - Trends in Floorheating Design

Coldbuster Press Release

In the Zone : Floor heating and the building industry

Released 6th February 2009

A recent article in Design and Architecture highlighted how economic factors could change the design of existing dwellings. “Zoned homes” are ones which are designed or modified to incorporate two independent living spaces. Archicentre’s Angus Kell envisages two separate entrances as well as separate kitchens, bathrooms, laundry facilities and outdoor spaces. Zoned homes can cater for the likes of parents and their ‘kidults’ or even two separate families living under the one roof.

The challenge for architects and builders then becomes the appropriate solution for extending home comforts such as heating into the new zones. Coldbuster is a floor heating system that lends itself to separate controls for primary heating in individual zones. Where the owner of a zoned home may choose to leave a mounted air conditioner or fireplace in its existing location, the new zone can incorporate modern Coldbuster under floor heating, regardless of floor finish. In weighing up the options, owners that find extending gas lines unsuitable or too expensive benefit from Coldbuster heaters running off electrical circuits already servicing the new zone.

Zoned homes envisage a house that is designed to change, through a simple design adjustment, from two separate self-contained areas to one big home. Coldbuster under carpet and timber heaters come in pre-set polyester panels and like an electric blanket, sit just below the floor finish. Installation is as simple as lifting the flooring and taping the panel to the underlay. When the empty nest fills up again, Coldbuster carpet heaters can easily be relocated to cater for heating in the new independent areas.

Another advantage of Coldbuster is its design for DIY installations. With the property market becoming unaffordable for some, zoned homes offer the advantage of upgrading the homeowner’s standard of living at a reasonable cost. Coldbuster tile heating offers the comfort of Generation4 under floor heating in kit form that can be installed by the handy DIY person and the tradesman alike. Money previously set aside for maintaining a new mortgage can instead be used to improve home heating and install modish underfloor heating systems.
